Wyeth salesman warned ethics board about dangers of HRT
Charles H. Payne was told he was being insubordinate to his manager when the Wyeth-Ayerst Territory Manager first raised concerns about promoting the drug company’s hormone replacement therapies (HRT) Premarin and Prempro to physicians for indications that were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The 22-year veteran of the company decided to take the issue to Wyeth-Ayerst’s Office of Ethics and Business Conduct.
In a letter dated July 18, 2000, Payne wrote that he had been given written presentations from company management to promote the drugs for conditions such as the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and of cardiovascular disease. The drugs are only approved for the treatment of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
